Biography

Dudu Tassa is one of Israel’s best-known singer-songwriters and a major figure in the country’s rock scene. He has released 12 albums, the first of which when he was only 13 years old. He has collaborated with many prominent artists, composed for television and cinema and has featured as actor and musician in Israeli films. His concerts are sold out weeks in advance.

On his albums as Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis, “Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis” (2011), “Ala Shawati“(2015) and soon to be released “El Hajar”, Tassa turns his powerful voice and innovative musicianship to salute the Al-Kuwaiti Brothers, the ground-breaking mid twentieth century Iraqi band featuring his grandfather and great uncle. Tassa sings their original songs in Arabic and Hebrew, and integrates Iraqi, Middle-eastern, and Israeli rock music, in his unique style known as “Iraq’n’roll” (also the name of the documentary film about Dudu Tassa and the story of the Al Kuwaiti brothers which was screened in many International Documentary film festivals).

Tassa has been championed by rock band Radiohead, who chose Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis as support for its 2017 USA tour. Prior to that, Radiohead recommended track “Dalina” from the album “Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis” on its website and its guitarist Jonny Greenwood guested on Tassa’s widely-aired single "What A Day" from album "At The End You Get Used To Everything".

Tassa’s international renown is growing. He performed at the 2012 Babelmed Music Showcase, at the United Nations building in New York in 2013, and in 2014 a US tour which included a SXSW Showcase in Austin, Texas. 2016 saw him play at the Sziget Festival in Hungary and at Womex and in 2017 he performed twice at the Coachella Festival in California and also at the Ostrava Festival In the Czech Republic.

He has been awarded the ACUM prize three times; in 2012 (with Nir Maimon), 2014 and 2017 for Composer of the year.
